So I was talking about my new blog to a friend over lunch today. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Did you know Wikipedia says that dumplings are ‘cooked balls of dough’. It even says gnocchi is a type of dumpling.
Friend: Does it matter how the dough is cooked?
Me: No, it can be baked, boiled, steamed, fried; they can be cooked anyhow really.
Friend: Does that make bread a dumpling?

Who would have thought that the term dumpling would be so hard to define? I suppose there are bread dumplings, such as Semmelknoedel, but I’m not convinced that all breads are dumplings.
